Bishops' Book (). The Institution of the Christian Man (also called The Bishops' Book), published in , was written by a committee of forty-six divines and bishops headed by Thomas purpose of the work, along with the Ten Articles of the previous year, was to implement the reforms of Henry VIII in separating from the Roman Catholic Church and establishing the Ecclesia Anglicana. Daughter of the Blood is fun and intriguing; Heir to the Shadows is just cheap wannabe storytelling. My main complaints are: 1. The story is a lot more scattered. Bishop keeps track of the main storyline (which is compelling at the beginning of the book and at the end) but I am not sure about the many, many unnerving and quite laughable subplots/5.

The use of the Catholic Church, along with it's heirarchy of nuns and priests, bishops and monks, gives these books a depth I've not seen in a fantasy novel since, perhaps, the master himself.

The bishop's heir. [Katherine Kurtz] -- Once again the kingdom of Gwynedd found itself facing the horror of a war between the Church and the Deryni. But this time, there was the added conspiracy of a revolution against the king. The books do not stand alone; you don't want to read Heir to the Shadows without reading Daughter of the Blood first.
Despite suffering somewhat from being the middle book of a trilogy, Heir to the Shadows is smoother and better-written than Daughter of the Blood. The opening is a bit frustrating, as Bishop starts the retrenching that's so.
